Dr. Nell Clinic/Hammond House building, is no more

2012-02-04 - Corner S. Monroe & W. Guardian Streets, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
It happened one day this week,
according to Donnie Rowe, Superintendent of Streets in Columbia, KY: The building which was orginally built as the late Dr. George Otis Nell's clinic and which more recently was the Hammond residence, is no more. The fresh earth plot about the size of a small family garden is where it stood. In the background, clockwise, are the houses traditionally known as the Salato House, the Jack & Catherine Miller House, the Methodist parsonage, the Traylor House, and nearest, the Lewis & Mary Wood Coffey House. The site is on the campus of the Columbia United Methodist Church, bounded by Burkesville Street, W. Guardian Street, S. Monroe Street, and West Fortune Streets. After the Nell Clinic/Hammond House was removed, only two enclosed structures remain: The church sanctuary/education building, and the one time Cumberland Dairies Plant building, now the home of the Adair Food Pantry. The rest is neatly landscaped church parking areas and a picket fence enclosed lawn with a picnic pavillion.
