Enjoying the Downtown Columbia Street scene - another way 2011-09-24 - 104 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Ronnie Furkins was enjoying the Fountain Plaza in Downtown Columbia, KY from an electric chair scooter he drove all the way from Harper Valley, today. Unlike most of us, he seated himself at the outdoor patio table, right in his transport. It was a good trip, he said, with almost no problems. There are ramped sidewalks most of the way. He only had to share roadway on Tutt Street and to get past the stairs on the sidewalk on the east side of the 300 block of Burkesville Street. It was a beautiful day to sit and reminisce with friends and tell stories. One he remembers, but didn't know if it were true or not, was that his famed uncle, Jam-Up Furkins, once scaled the courthouse steeple for a repair needed there, maybe to paint the structure's steeple. He said this was his first scooter trip to town, and one he hopes to try again. Seeing people taking a Coke break or enjoying a family dinner at one of the Square's two outdoor dining areas is encouraging evidence of how much the public embraces the idea. Soon, perhaps, community leaders will take notice, the obvious trend will register, and they will say, as with almost every change, "There go our followers, we must hasten to lead them," and hopefully, lead. -ED WAGGENER Permalink | Comments?
