Columbia icon with Greek influence joins two traditional ones

2011-08-19 - From Young and Fairground Streets, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
People from across America know where Columbia, KY, is when they see the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raider Busses rolling along the highways. They are huge billboards for the school and Columbia, KY. Another icon is the famed Begley Chapel, top of photo, now joined by another scene which will become a symbol for the community, the School of Nursing/School of Professional Counseling Building in the center. It's not derivative, but it is a reminder of another symbol of another Greek influenced structure, the Columbia Baptist Church. More than one person has said that the sight of the lighted edifice, seen from the 1000 mile point on Campbellsville RD reminded them of the Parthenon of Nashville (and the old one in Athens, Greece), and always meant, "Almost home. Almost to Columbia!" The bus is parallel to Fairground ST, in the lower parking lot. The packed lots at the school are an instant signal that Columbia is energized again; again, for the longer seasons, Lindseyville, as much as it is a reminder of the need for a whole new way of looking at giving substance to the city's claim to be a leader in energy conservation and energy use.
