Loveliest of Flowers now: The Ironweed now

2011-08-19 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Ironweed is CM's nominee for National Flower of Adair County, or at least national fall flower. The beautiful plant is abundant here. This picture is of our limited crop on Fortune Street, which gives only a hint of its beauty on some massive acreages here. Could be the plant is so appreciated because it is a cue that the best season of the year, fall, is sincerely here. Could be, it's appreciated in much the same way as the theme songs for Our Gal Sunday and Helen Trent were when we were kids. Most of us never listened to the radio soaps, but they meant a great lunch was being prepared by our mothers in finally cool kitchens after a long hot, summer and that sublime orthodox sandwich of sliced ham, iceberg lettuce, real White bread as sweet as angel food cake, with both slices generously slathered with Miracle Whip, accompanied by a made from scratch hot soup with left over jam cake and washed down with glasses of farm fresh ice cold milk, delivered in glass gallon jugs to the doorstep that morning. Or it could be the anticipation of the utility of the iron weed after the blooms disappeared, when the stalks attained ultimate utility as pull from the ground weapons of no destruction, used as missiles by boys, or, for advanced males, as the framework for a grass covered Indian teepee. That's just a few of the reasons why we nominate Ironweed for the National Flower of Adair County. -Ed Waggener
