Favorite Old Photo: Greensburg Square, ca 1960s

2011-07-17 - Greensburg, KY - Photo by Larry Smith.
Old Photo Collector Larry Smith, in real life the Operations Director for Shoreline Communications, reached back in his album of most treasured old photos for this one of the Square in Greensburg, KY, of perhaps 50 years ago. "The photographer was looking north from the roof or upper floor of Woodson Lewis," Smith said. "I think it was just a regular day - maybe not even a Saturday, because you can't see a line for the matinee at the Franklin Theatre." In fact, some may not see the Franklin Theatre, it's beyond the service station in the upper right corner of the photo. That service station was owned and operated by Abraham Berry. Later, it became the George Huddleston Municipal Building, and today houses Calhoun & Cook Insurance. To the right of that building was the three story building where the John Durham Grocery was located, on the ground floor, of course. On the mid left, just across the Court Street - the cross street in the middle of the photo - is the Corner Drug Building. And the yellow building in the left top center of the photo is the People's Bank Building. Smith is not totally sure of the day of the photo. He's hoping some Green River Kruzer or other old car expert will scan the page for the newest car and send a circa date. He did estimate the cars on the square and on the visible parts of Main and Court Streets at around 200. Comments are welcome See Richard Raines comments Thinks some of cars are as new as 1958
