Scenic Taylor Co., KY: Historic Green River Bridge

2011-07-17 - Taylor Co., KY - Photo by Larry Smith.
Larry Smith, Operations Manager for Shoreline Communications and the news voice for Radio Station 99.9FM, The Big Dawg, Campbellsville, KY, took this photo at the historic Iron Bridge over Green River just below the Green River Dam. "The old stone work in the bridge's foundation is cracking," he said. "Judge Eddie Rogers (Taylor County County Judge Exectutive) said that the county now has the funds to replace the bridge with a modern concrete bridge." The old structure, one of the last remaining Steel Bridges in the Seven County area, was built using the stonework on the banks which also supported a wooden bridge which, Smith said, was burned in the Battle of Tebbs Bend. At CM, we're aware of one other Steel Bridge in the area, the Hiram Bell Bridge on Red Lick Road in Metcalfe County and the one on the Garrison Construction campus in Clay Ridge - on private property. If anyone knows of others in Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell or Taylor Counties of Kentucky, we'd appreciate the news/and or photos to share.
