Birds of Kentucky: Barred Owl in The Holler

Not everyone is lucky enough to see a Barred Owl, like this beautiful bird which came to The Holler and was lucky enough to have this handsome portrait made, but Wayne and Barbara Armitage have a pair which have just taken up residence at The Farm at Tucker's Station, Bull Run RD, Columbia, KY. The owls were heard this morning and identified even before Wayne spotted them. The call is easily learned. It sounds like "Who cooks for you?" Bird voices are more easy to identify these days. iBird, a program Barbara Armitage has for her iPad, is one good one; she also recommends the website, All About Birds. Shamarie Claiborne photographed the barred owl above, in the latter part of March, 2009. It's part of the CMs Birds of Kentucky archives.
