Historian Mike Watson with a few of his Wyckoff books

2010-10-26 - Photo by Ed Waggener. 307 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY
Recognizing another of Columbia's literary giants: Adair County Historian Mike Watson portrayed Columbia, KY author Rev. Albert Capwell Wyckoff in the stunningly successful Silent City presentation last night, Monday, October 25, 2010, at the Columbia Cemetery. Above Mr. Watson with his display of some of the books the onetime Columbia Presbyterian and Union Presbyterian Church pastor wrote. Wyckoff is best remembered for his Mercer Boys adventure series, written in the tradition of British author G.A. Henty and Joseph Altsheler. Significantly, Wyckoff is buried less than 25 miles from the birthplace of Joseph Altsheler, just north of the Metcalfe County line in Hart County, at Three Springs, KY. Mr. Watson has collected all of the works of Wyckoff, a New Jersey native who had not finished high school when he started writing books, but later earned a theological degree from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary. He's especially proud of the small volume, "Look to the Hills," which was published after Wyckoff's death, and which Mr. Watson believes was likely written in Columbia, KY.
