More evidence of Chicago competitiveness with Columbia

2010-09-15 - Photo by Pen. Chicago, Illinois
Here's just one more piece of evidence of how seriously Chicago, IL is trying to catch up with Columbia, and one more justification to not just get a Portillo's here, but to take one of theirs. This "Bean," structure is all too similar to one of the ideas Joe Moore and I have had for the Columbia, KY Square for years to be a mere coincidence. I had envisioned almost the same thing, on a more tasteful scale, in front of Murrell Burton's Real Estate office, and Joe Moore has often talked about the need for a canopy, with outdoor air conditioning, over the courthouse and central business section. Pen documented the Bean on a recent trip to Chicago, scoping out the progress Chicago is making trying to match food available in Columbia. But Satchell's moral was right, Columbians can't look back, Chicago may be catching up with us. They call this thing, "Cloud Gate." It's at the AT&T Plaza. Laying on Al Jolson's side, it is right cute, even if it is in arch rival territory. -EW
