2010-05-24 - Photo by Ryan Storm. Holmes Bend area, District 6, Adair Co., KY
"After taking a day off the bike, I decided to go to the Holmes Bend area. Here is a photo from my attempt at fishing from my kayak last weekend - unsuccessful except for a few good photos," writes Lindsey Wilson cyclist Ryan Storm. Any help with botanical ID will be appreciated. Use the "Comments" button with the photo to send information. June 9, 2010, help arrived from L.H. Murrell, who wrote, "Found on Google, a site showing similar red-blooming lichens, growing on a rail fence in Pickens Co., South Carolina," writes L.H. Murrell, "The comment was that the red-tipped lichens, probably Cladonia cristatella, are known as British soldiers lichen."
