Birds of Kentucky: Bird nest in gravel. What bird? (Killdeer)

2010-05-18 - Photo by Judy Corbin. Ebenezer community, South Green Co., KY
"Just wondering?" Judy Corbin writes with this photo taken Monday, May 17, 2010. "What kind of bird would have a nest in the rocks to lay her eggs? The rocks are dug out into a nesting area, and the egg was laid by the momma sometime today."
Thanks for this wonderful photo. It goes with our unannounced 2010 theme of Wild Babies. If anyone is for sure, please send the answer to Judy Corbin's question using the Comments button with this photo. A first guess is that it is an egg laid by one of the most entertaining creatures living with us, the killdeer. Learned confirmation: "Judy's photo is that of a killdeer egg," writes Brave Jim of the Buckeye Tundra, which he signs, "Jim (from north of the Green River, where the penguins rule)."
