A Right Good-Sized Cow Snake in The Holler

2010-04-25 - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne. The Holler, Old Clearsprings RD, Columbia, KY
"My least favorite creature in The Holler is one of these, a cow snake, which visited our back porch on Saturday," Shamarie Claiborne reports. "A majority vote to kill the snake was overridden by Kevin, who says the snake is useful, that it kills mice and rats. But to me, a snake is a snake is a snake. They all give me the willies. The snake was allowed to live. Dusty said it was five feet long, but it looks a lot longer to me." One of the most disconcerting habits of the snakes is the "Kerplop," noise they make when they fall out of trees. Otherwise, they have strong defenders. Geneice Marcum says she remembers a neighbor farmer in Metcalfe County who told people he'd shoot them if they harmed the cow snake in his barn. It was a useful pet, the farmer said.
