Is it also a Big River? This sign at the Cumberland River in Burkesville begs the answer to two questions of perhaps indefinite proportions: 1) How cold is the Cumberland River? Local legend says that a light jacket is needed on float (does this river also have foat trips any time of the year, and 2) Is the Cumberland River a big river, as Maxie Oakes maintained in heated debates with Dr. Billy Neat, former PVA; former Adair County Sheriff Jimmy Firquin; and former Adair County Attorney Ray Hutchison, all three of whom argued with Mr. Oakes that they had seen the Cumberland River, and it wasn't a Big River, after all? Mr. Oakes was uncompromising in his defense of the stream's status as a big river. We, of course, concur with Mr. Oakes.
