First fatal crash, Columbia Western Bypass, September 4, 2009

2009-09-04 - Burkesville RD at Columbia Western Bypass, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
The First Fatality registered on the Columbia Western Bypass since its opening on October 9, 2008, occurred at the intersection of the bypass and Burkesville RD. The 1997 Pontiac in the top photo was traveling North on the bypass, and was struck by the car carrier in the lower photo and dragged some 150 feet from the point of impact to its resting place. Columbia Police Officer Josh Brockman, bottom photo, assisted by Officer Kevin Atwood, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement, the Columbia Adair County Fire Department, and the Kentucky State Highway Department also responded. The driver of the Pontiac was pronounced dead at the scene.
