First ACHS State Tournament Team: 1954

THIS TEAM WAS THE FIRST ADAIR COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL, the second Adair County boys basketball team, to make it to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Tournament. The year was 1954, and this team placed fourth in Kentucky. Losing in the semi-finals to the eventual champion, Billy Ray Cassidy-led Inez. Front row, from left are Rayburn Daugherty (34), Hack Rowe (21), Ralph "Coony" Shearer (23), George Cheatham (32), Don Miller (31). Back row Wayne Smith (25), Lewis Pendleton (24), Billy Conover (20), Jim Richards (33), Terry Randall (22), and Willard Smith (35). At this posting, June 21, 2009, all members of the team from 55 years ago are living except Rayburn Daugherty, George Cheatham, Don Miller, and Billy Conover are living. The photo is from the collection of Ann Heskamp Curtis, a copy of which now hangs in the Gallery of Historic Photos at Ol' Joe's B&B Que, 824 Campbellsville RD, Columbia, KY.
