Pictures from the Past: Amandaville, KY PO; store

2009-06-15 - Amandaville, Northern Cumberland Co., KY - Photo from John and Joe Chat Chowning collection.
G.W. BROCKMAN STORE, AMANDAVILLE, KY. The Double Cola Bottling Co. truck from Greensburg, KY was delivering a load of soft drinks, back then often called "dopes" in the picture of the G.W. Brockman General Store and United States Post Office at Amandaville, KY, in the 1940s from the collection of Joe Chat and John Chowning. In the right hand photo, several unidentified residents were enjoying visits on the stores high porch. One sign there is evidence of a Columbia, KY bottler, Dr. Pepper. The drink was made on East Fortune Street, where the Municipal Parking lot is now located. Joe Chat Chowning says that there was also a skating rink attached to the G.W. Brockman store at one time. At the time of the photo, KY 704 had stores every few miles, beginning, from the north, stores at Gadberry, Fairplay, Inroad, Amandaville, and Bakerton, to name a few. Travelers could get gas at most, sandwiches, snacks and groceries at all. Today, gas is available on KY 704 only by dropping off the road at Bakerton, to a fine, modern Sprowles general store on the way to the Cumberland River, Lawson Bottoms, and the river landing at Xerxes. The store location was 19 miles from the Square in Columbia, KY, about 10.5 miles from the Cumberland County seat at Burkesville, KY.
