Tomato war escalates: Pewee claims crown rightfully his'n

2009-05-04 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
A.L. (PEWEE) SINCLAIR, Lower left, is best know as a cat man, but he throwed a fit this morning, outraged that Barbara Armitage, Lower right, should promote herself as having the first tomatoes harvested in Adair County, KY in the 2009 season. Junor Feese, the Man in Black and best known for getting Donna Feese to marry him, corroborates A.L.'s claim to have harvested and eaten a hamburger size tomato from his backyard garden, of a Friday, May 1, 2009. There is now some real bad feelings between the contestants. All of which may be moot at later harvest times, when real heavyweight gardeners Russell Guy Perkins and the Quiet Man, Tommy Giles, reveal, in their modest ways, what they have done. In the top picture, the pumpkin like tomato is a Perkins, one of the average sized pickings from his garden last year, photographed against some tomatoes grown by Linda Waggener at her very fertile one acre Fortune Street farm. ColumbiaMagazine.com will remain a neutral observer, uninfluenced by gifts of giant firm-ripe, delicious tasting tomatoes like the big one above which came from a bushel basket of perfect, firm, ripe, Olympic sized tomatoes handed the photographer by generous champion gardener Russell Guy Perkins.
