Adair Co., KY's most famous thoroughbred: Coax Me Chad

2009-05-03 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
IT'S NOW 25 YEARS SINCE COAX ME CHAD'S GREAT KENTUCKY DERBY: Wally Burress holds a display created by his wife, Laura Miller Burress, depicting events in the life of Coax Me Chad, the great thoroughbred now retired in Adair County, KY. Coax Me Chad was second in the 110th running of the Kentucky Derby, on the first Saturday in May, 1984. Chad finish just 2.5 lengths behind Swale, the Claiborne Farm horse trained by Woody Stephens. Burress was the assistant trainer to Ronnie Warren that year. Now, one quarter of a century later, Chad lives in Adair County and is owned by Burress. For the past two years Chad has been at the Larry Downey farm on Greensburg Road, Columbia, KY, but now he's been moved to Burress' farm three miles out on KY West 80.
