Dykes Airmail: Roadside humor went awry once

2009-01-01 - KY 900, Glens Fork, District 3, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
IT'S BEEN A TRADEMARK of Eldridge Dykes places, both when he lived at the intersection of Montpelier and Keen-Wilson Road in the Zion community, and here, at his spread on KY 900 in the suburbs of Glens Fork: An airborne "Dykes Airmail" postal box. It's good for a smile or a laugh from most who slow down when they pass it, but one time, his brother D. Roy Dykes says, it backfired. "He was waiting for a big check," the brother said, "and it never came. He asked his carrier, then Joe Hunter, of he had seen any sign of it. He was getting pretty anxious. Joe Hunter told Eldridge he sure had. And he had delivered it three weeks ago. 'It looked so important I just figured you'd want it airmail, Joe Hunter told him." D. Roy Dykes recalls. "That Joe Hunter was as big a card as Eldridge, and he'd taken a ladder or had some other device to put that envelope with the big check in Eldridge's airmail box. Eldridge had to figure a way to get it," he said, "but he never for a minute let the trick make him think of taking that airmail box down." Roy Dykes told it on his brother from a safe distance. He lives in Florida. A Today Feature picture.
