Insects of Adair Co., KY: The Robber Fly

2008-08-16 - Liberty Road, Columbia, KY - Photo By Betty Sue Jasper.
BETTY SUE JASPER CAPTURED THIS INCREDIBLE PICTURE," and writes: "This afternoon I was chasing a very pretty orange butterfly around the thistle patch in my backyard. The butterfly, I am sure, was very happy with itself watching me going through the weeds and thorns to get a picture. I did get some pictures of the butterfly but they turned out blurry. I would have thought something was wrong with my camera if it wasn't for the fact that on one of my laps around the thistle patch I happened to take this picture of this not so pretty insect and it is very clear. So watch out, little butterfly, I will come looking for you again tomorrow!"
MORE: "The photo is that of a Robber Fly," writes CU biology teacher Alan Reed. "There are many different species and they make their living by using strong piercing/sucking mouthparts. Depending upon species, they stab and suck the body fluids from certain bees, wasps spiders and other insects. Doesn't sound so appetizing, but all animals have to eat. The Robber Fly is harmless to people." FLICKR A Today, Sunday, August 17, 2008 Today's Picture Album photo
