With Bypass opening, is it time to reclaim Burkesville Street?

2008-08-03 - Burkesville ST, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
WITHOUT A STOP LIGHT, speeding motorists can run 50mph or more down Burkesville Street, now. It's a nightmare for runwater runoff and flooding down Town Creek. And an unnecessary urban heat zone. Isn't it time to turn around a half century of blockheaded thinking and reclaim Burkesville Street for people, for residents of Columbia, for local business? Picture Burkesville Boulevard with either a center tree lined median or, better, tree lined sidewalk borders, on-street parking, a 15-20 mph speed limit, four-way stops with pedestrian crosswalks at every crossing, and narrow lanes of traffic. Picture people walking, riding motorscooters and electric cars. Picture being able to scoot about town in a golf cart. Picture making the street friendly to taxpaying residents again. Picture making this part of Columbia one of the most livable areas in any downtown anywhere. With the kind of leadership which is spearheading the Walk Around the Earth and Second Sunday in October movement, it could be done.-EW
