Scenic Metcalfe Co., KY: Footbridge and The Gum

2008-07-27 - East Fork,Little Barren River, Sulphur Well, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
SULPHUR WELL, on KY 70 in Metcalfe County, has been a tourist attraction for over a century, and draws big crowds, which seem to be bigger with the cost of fuel inspiring many to have holidays closer to home. At one time, the big attraction was the perceived health benefits from drinking the sulphur water which came from "The Gum," the artesian well in the left of the photo. Today more and more people come for quiet walks across the footbridge, picknicking, or to visit the capital of country ham, the Lighthouse restaurant, the Sulphur Well Country Store, or the town's newly opened souvenir shop. The town's biggest event is coming up soon, when the Third Sunday in August homecoming is celebrated. Owing to how one goes across the mountain, the distance is about 25 miles from Columbia, KY.
