Shamarie: Portrait of a dragonfly in The Holler

2008-07-12 - The Holler, Old Clearsprings RD, Columbia, KY - Photo By Shamarie Claiborne.
Shamarie Claiborne caught this guy on his antenna on her truck yesterday morning. "I thought it was cool," she writes. Dragonflies are considered valuable predators, and eat a huge number of mosquitoes which might otherwise harass the peaceful inhabitants of The Holler. However, they don't limit their appetites to bad bugs. They also enjoy an occasional honeybee, and treat themselves to butterflies from time to time, though it would be hoped they do so with the same remorse a backslidden vegan feels when gluttonizing a juicy prime rib. Dragonflies are fun to watch, too. The race was helicoptering eons befor Igor Sikorsky ever thought of his contraption. Flickr.
