2008-07-12 - Campbellsville, KY - Photo From the collection of Larry Smith.
Larry Smith, WHVE the Wave 92.7 FM radio anchor and South Central Kentucky historian, sent this photo of lower Main Street in days when the street was sensibly cooled naturally by shade trees. It was in the days before city fathers forgot all rationality and blacktopped sidewalk to sidewalk to create urban heat islands where they didn't have to be, and to create storm runoff and floods. One wonders how tourists would be kept out of downtowns in South Central Kentucky if they still had this inviting look, as Greensburg, Hodgenville, and Jamestown, nearby, are recapturing.
