Larry Smith: View from Greensburg Cemetery

2008-07-10 - Greensburg, KY - Photo By Larry Smith.
Larry Smith, WHVE the Wave 92.7 FM news anchor and historian, was in his home county yesterday, Wednesday, July 9, 2008, and took this photo. Larry Smith writes, "Here's a photo taken from atop the Greensburg Cemetery. This photo reminds us of the beauty and the dazzling history of the town. This old river city sitting proudly on the banks of the Green River holding a wealth of history maintaining the oldest courthousein Kentucky. Many folks who live in surrounding counties such as Adair, Taylor, Metcalfe and several other counties can take family research to a new level by starting in Green County. Green County has the original records dating back to the creation the county and since Green County at one time on the state map extended to the Tennessee State line. Lots of families have roots to Green County." In the photo, in the foreground is one of Green County's oldest churches, the old Greensburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church. At right is a corner of the Greensburg Auto Parts, which operated under the ownership of Morris Goff, later Green County County Judge Executive. The street is Hodgenville Avenue, and the intersection is with First Street. In the upper right, the two white chimneys are part of the historic Cowherd & Parrott Funeral Home, and the high hill at the top is beyond the Green River. Editor's note: Greensburg is unique in being home to America's top radio broadcast personality, Larry Smith, and top on-the-road television personality in current production, Dave Shuffett. No other town in the United States can make that claim.
