Another real railroad was in Edmonton, once, almost

2008-06-29 - Downtown Edmonton, KY - Photo By Linda Waggener.
When the Great Silver Eagle took joyriders through the streets of Edmonton, during the Blueberry Festival, it was the community's first brush with railroading. There was a time when a railroad was proposed to connect Edmonton with Glasgow. According to local anecdotes, a promoter raising funds for the railroad would alternate the name of the proposed rail line from Hamilton Rail Line to Kinnaird Rail Line, depending on which Edmonton bank president had put the most capital into the venture. The railroad was unique, locals said, because some the line was started, lore has it, not from the existing line in Glasgow as is usually done, but from a point on the creek behind the Pitts Barbecue on W. Stockton Street (Glasgow Road) west toward Barren County. The line, like the one proposed to Campbellsville from Columbia, was never built, is sadly missed today when rail offers far cheaper transport than gas guzzling automobiles. In Columbia, we had a Depot on Reed Street, but the line was never built, according to James F. "Smoky" Harper, who knows about these things.
