Adair County Wildlife: Fishing spider

Nature photographer Shamarie Claiborne wrote that, after spotting a praying mantis, which reminded her of God, she looked on the wall and saw the spider, above. She doesn't say whether she was implying the stark contrast of the spider's scary appearance as giving the opposite impression and this creature reminded her of the Devil, or whether she was referring to the Fishing Spider's ability to emulate Jesus by walking on water. Fishing spiders can do that, and can swim like Mark Spitzer. They seem to be quite nice spiders, and do, according to indications from the University of Kentucky, take care of a lot of bad bugs in the Holler by dining on them. More accurate entomology welcome. Clicking Read More accesses the "Today, Sunday, June 29, 2008," feature, where the Today's Picture Album includes Shamarie Claiborne's photo of a Praying Mantis with its little paws in a praying position.
