Scenic Adair Co., KY: Trumpet vine at Arnolds Landing

2008-06-23 - Arnolds Landing, Knifley, KY - Photo By Linda Waggener.
TO BORROW A WORD, "NOTIONAL," FROM JANICE HOLT GILES, who sometimes used the word to describe mules and men, the trumpet vine is nature's "notional" artist. Like the mules and the men JHG describes, the plant does as it pleases--mostly, though there are trumpet whisperers who train the vine into topiary, and it is beautiful that way. But it is more the flower of freedom, a stubborn democrat, best left to its own creative instincts. It finds its own palettes on barns, downtown buildings, and here, to accent one wall of green along the trail at Arnold's Landing. At least in summer, it could be the official national flower of Adair County. Clicking Read More accesses the "Today, Monday, June 23, 2008" feature with Today's Picture Album.
