Town Creek Catalpa: The Giving Tree

2008-06-10 - On Town Creek, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Just a few days ago, this old catalpa tree began with hints of white buds 30 feet over head. Each night at supper time we watch the blooms open and cascade further down the tree until today, it is filled with white blossoms. We don't know how old it is, but the tree was a marking place for kids exploring the wilderness of the little branch over a half century ago. Thirty years ago, it still stood upright and our kids played under it, building dams, catching minnows and crawdads in the creek and excitedly spotting some of the thousands of garter snakes which abound on it and its sister stream from the Sales Coffey Cave area. In the intervening years, the tree has fallen, but it continues to live. It's still a playground for our grandsons, who climb on the horizontal trunk and explore the dode center of limb stumps with sticks and flashlights. In a little while, catalpa worms will take all its leaves. That's a bonanza for fisherman Dallas Richards, who has historic wormrights for the prized bait. The worms will take all the leaves, and the catalpa will show it's interesting limb patterns, then, magically, the leaves will come back, providing the same greenery as above, till fall. -EW
