The Crusade for Children, ca 50 years ago

2008-05-23 - Russell Road, E80, Columbia, KY - Photo From the Eddie Kessler Collection.
The CRUSADE for CHILDREN has a great tradition in Columbia. The photo above, sent to us by Eddie Kessler of Kessler Mortgage Co, Columbia, KY. appears to be from the 1950's. The firemen appears to be the late Gaspard Brockman, who was the proprietor of Columbia General Appliances for many years. Perhaps someone will recognize the man in the car and the child in the back seat. Some things remain the same in the scene, looking east. On the left, there is a sign for the Lakeway Motel, then owned and operated by Leo and Charlotte Wheatley. In the distance, on the right, the Gulf Service Station operated by Mr. Jones, and over the sign, what may be "Hill Oil Company," the bulk plant owned by Eddie Hill. Just beyond the tip of the brim of Mr. Brockman's hat is the Circle R, which closed after a fire. The big frame house was built by the Jessie Keith family. It was later razed to make way for the Dairy Chick Drive-in restaurant, owned by J.D. Harper and Warren Webb. And the jeep is parked on the lot of the late Clyde and Anna Young's Adair Builders' Supply. That building now is a Tommy Grider property. The jeep may or may not be the famous restored by Darrell Young. All corrections and additions are welcome.
