Adair Drystone Masonry : Restoration, High & Greensburg

2007-10-07 - High Street, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
The wall at the Appalachian Defense Fund Building is rebuilt and the work is getting raves for Henry Lay, left, the Burkesville, KY, mason who is in charge of the job, and his step son, Matt Cope, who assisted him. The work was done well ahead of schedule. A large stack of rock in front of the building was left over when the wall was reconstructed. Using a poured concrete footer with a liberal amount of rebar, Lay was able to build a strong wall with fewer stones. The leftover limestone blocks will be used for additional stone decor on the lawn of the historic building. The weave used in the stone is Lay's own design, he said. Richard Phelps who was able to watch the work from the porch of Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home was so elated with the work he said he hope others in Adair County would contract with Mr. Lay to do restorative or new drystone masonry walls and fences.
