Larry Smith Pictures from the Past: Franklin Theatre

2007-09-28 - Main Street, Greensburg, KY - Photo From the collection of Larry Smith.
Larry Smith, South Central Kentucky Historian and Newsman at WHVE 92.7 The WAVE, shares this great Photo from the Past, and writes, "Here's another great photo from my collection of days gone by. This photo made in the late 1950's is the Franklin Theatre on Main Street in Greensburg, KY, with a group of people waiting to see a Saturday afternoon matinee." The movie was Rim of the Canyon, a 1949 movie starring Gene Autry, with the wonder horse, Champion. IMBD movie trivia says that Jock Mahoney, who plays Pete Reagan (as Jock Mahoney), was later the oldest Tarzan portrayer. While the building still stands, the theater is no longere in business. However, Green County does have one of the few drive-in theaters in Kentucky still operating; it's the Skyline at 5600 Hodgenville Road, Summersville, KY.Larry Smith doesn't have identification for the photo, but look closely, you may see yourself or someone you know.
Ruth Ann Campbell September 28, 2007: "I worked at this theater when I was a young girl.I see Russell Phillips standing near the doors on the right. He and his wife Pansy were mentors of mine. Good memories.
