Scenic Adair County: magical Neat Hollow Road

2007-07-27 - District 1, Adair County, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener. One of the delightful scenes down Adair County's magical Neat Hollow Road is Shirley & Edward Brown's garden on the north side of the road across from their home. It is especially nice in the early evening dusk. The Browns are retired now, so they have time to make the place pretty. He worked for Tarter Gate, Mrs. Brown for Oshkosh B'Gosh in Columbia. Sunflowers dominate the garden - they are for bird feed - and there are zinnias and other flowers for butterflies, too. But plot also also furnishes plenty of corn, tomatoes, corn, green beans--and even some peanuts for their table. The Browns enjoy the bounty of the ground, even though they share more than they want to with raccoons and even lose too much produce bit to deer raids. Mr. Brown has invented one foil unwelcome wildlife mooching, a hanging tomato plant nourished from a plastic bucket and hung from his potting shed. Neat Hollow Road connects Ella/Fairview/Goodin's CrossRoads/Smiley at 11 miles out KY 206 to the Little Cake Road.
