Billy Whitney, Hatcher RDs bridge will be ambitious project

2007-07-26 - Russell Creek, Billy Whitney Road & Hatcher Roads, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
If Judge Ann Melton can find any way to do it this scene will change. A top priority of the CJE is a new span at this point on Russell Creek. On the near side is Billy Whitney Road. On the far side, Hatcher Road, which can be a short cut for many to KY 61 at Clay Ridge. In this scene, Charles Caldwell and his son in the brown pickup wait their turn to cross in the nearest shallow riffles. Smaller cars use the more distant arc, and can cross only in when the creek is low. Caldwell said the crossing is heavily used. "It would save Dr. Giles half the trip to the hospital," he said. "We've been hearing about a bridge for years," he said, "but we've about given up hope." Judge Melton is asking for state funds to build the span, which would be the third, and most ambitious one, built in her 7-month-old administration, costing an estimated $220-300,000.
