Nick Lile's lilies along the Green River race course

2007-03-14 .
Nick Lile's crop of March lilies stand out, brightening even in the District 1 daffodil capitol of Greater Neatsville. The acre and one half lillied field appears to be randomly planted and totally natural. But Lile, a a former Wisconsinite who's well settled in Adair County after 10 years here, gives away a tip on how the perfect effect was achieved. "I wait until up in the summer, when the blades start to die back, and then I plow." That scatters the bulbs, and presents a joyous congregation massed along KY 206, with impression that those in the back of the field, gathered in smaller groups, are waiting to join, just holding back to follow closer, one more convenient day. That's the famed Leland Grant store in the background, and, across the river beyond, Giles Ridge. Lile's flowers are in a field betwen his home, which sits next to Tabernacle Christian Church, and Ivan Goodin's place. Lile is retired U.S. Army veteran who also had a career in Civil Service. He bought the Audie and Anderson place, here, 13 miles NE of Columbia, KY, at an estate auction in 1997. The scene is along the course of the Green River Road Race, the US Cycling national event which will start at 11:00am CT at Purdy Separate Baptist Church.
