Historic Columbia: When the Art Gallery was over Frazier Bros.

2006-12-31 - Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo of photo by CM staff.
History Repeats. Columbians have always had an interest in the arts. This photo of a picture hanging in the Genealogy Room at the Adair County Public Library shows an interesting time in Columbia. The big store sign says "Frazier Bros," a general merchandise store. Interestingly, to the right, there is a sign over the door to the upstairs which says "Art Gallery," in exactly the same place as the sign for the Arnold Art Gallery is today. The building to the right would be the M&M Furniture Building of today. Those are real people in the the upstairs windows, not drawings on windows. Notice too, the vacant lot next to the building on the left, indicating that this was before the First National Bank was built. The building on the left is now part of the First National Bank. For boys growing up ca 1950, the Art Gallery door is an important landmark. There was, for awhile, a tiny hobby shop which sold the grandest assortment of Comet model airplane kits there. More information on this photo would be welcome. And, an imperative: Hie thee to the new Genealogy Room at the Adair County Public Library and see the real photo. With the recent remodeling, the Genealogy Room has become an even more important family research center.
