RIDES: Don Bault and 1957 Bel-Air Coupe 2006-12-27 - Flatwoods, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener. DON and FAY BAULT, Sparksville, KY, bought this 50 year old 1957 Bel Air coupe at a yard sale two years ago in Glasgow, KY. It looks like it just rolled off the lot at Columbia Motors, with just a few custom details (the Corvette Red Paint for one thing). When they bought it, it was in practically the same state as it is today. Benny Courtney, Breeding auto body specialist, has worked on a few body details, but other than that, the vehicle, which now has 95,000+ miles is as they bought it. The car has its original 327 HP V-8, but the old Powerglide transmission has been replaced with a Turbo-Autoglide one, and the upholstery is new. One of the trademark 1957 Chev tailfins can be seen through the window. It doesn't have air conditioning, but it does have the mandatory fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view window. The car is re-equipped with twin Flowmaster mufflers. When Bault lets off the accelerator coming over Wheeler Hill, it does make a mellow sound. "It'll cackle," he said. It's not for sale, unless the price is right, Bault says. At home, in Sparksville, the Chevy is garaged in a new $20,000 barn constructed just for it.
