Folklore of the Old West Festival 2006: Columbiana, Field House

2006-10-15 - Reed & Fortune Streets, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener. FIELD HOUSE. COLUMBIANA Re-enactors chose a historically significant site from which to stage the "robbery" of the Bank of Columbia, the parking lot in front of the John Field House at the corner of Reed and Fortune Streets. The house, now owned by present residents David & Eva Rigney and family, is located one block from the actual bank building where the actual bank stood, and it is one of a limited number of structures in Adair County which antedate the April, 1872, robbery. An entry in the Walking Tour of Columbia, written by historian Vonnie Kolbenschlag, reads: 1812 Field House-National Register. John Field was C-lumbia's first jailer. He owned numerous properties and a nail making business. He furnished his Federal style home with costly furniture brought from Virginia, but he enjoyed it only briefly. He lost most of his property in the 1820's, as did many business persons, because of an unsecured state banking system. The Fields rented a front bedroom to John Marshall Clemens, lawyer, and his wife Jane for a very short time. Much later, when the Clemens lived in Missouri, their fifth child, Samuel, was born. That is this house's connection to that child, who as an author, called himself Mark Twain.
