Rex Coffey, well-known businessman, murdered

2006-06-12 - Columbia - Photo by Linda Waggener.

REX COFFEY, shown at left with his wife Tammy at the 2003 opening of their new building, was shot at a church picnic Saturday evening.
Rex Coffey was with family and friends at the Beech Grove Baptist Church when, reports say, 68-year-old Willie Paul Grant drove up, shined his vehicle lights on the picnic shelter, and shot Rex in the head with a .22 rifle.

Rex was flown to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville where he lived until just before 10am Sunday morning. He is a well-known businessman in Columbia who started out in a small way on family land in Glens Fork and, with his wife Tammy, built the business and expanded it to serve recreational vehicle riders in a wide region of southcentral Kentucky.

Obituary information will be available later today.
Clicking 'read more' leads to the initial Kentucky State Police report which also contains a link to Rex's story and testimonial printed here at their Grand Opening. The mystery of why this happened is being investigated and will be linked to these stories as facts unfold.
