History of Aviation and Space Exploration: Streeval Field

2006-04-15 - Northern Christine, KY 206 & Snake Creek Road, Burton Ridge, Adair CO, KY - Photo Staff. This building once served as the hangar and the main terminal at fabled Streeval Field. The open expanse at right only hints at the vastness of the runway, which is built on one of the few places in Adair as flat as most of Bartholomew County. The tarmac, if there was one, is gone. But here, in the heart of post-WWII America, aviation history was made. After the field closed, it was also the site of redemption for Debbie Sinclair, where she did penance, she thinks, by picking tons peppers and other hard labor. The sign on the building still says, Adair Receiving Station a reminder of the glory days of the bell pepper industry. Some remember that the fence in the photo above caught the landing gear on Bobby Collin's plane, causing it to crash, either coming or going. It was one the worst disasters in the history of aviation in Adair County.
