Scenic Adair County. Historic Church buildings series. Zion Baptist Church + School

2006-03-26 - South KY 55, Columbia, Adair CO, KY - Photo Linda Waggener. Zion Baptist Church and School once occupied these buildings, beautifully preserved by their present occupants, Gaddie-Shamrock, Inc. The buildings are located at five miles south of Columbia, KY, and two miles north of Glens Fork on KY 55. The church is on the left. Zion School is on the right. The restoration retains almost all of the buildings' historic look. The building which housed the school retains only the brick portion of the structure. A frame addition on the end toward the church, was two-story and about one-fourth the length of the brick structure. A school bell sat atop the roof of the addition. The Zion Baptist Church was organized in December of 1802 by Elijah Summers Burbridge and John Waggener, according to the Ruth Willis, church editor for the old Columbia Statesman. The church was the "Mother Church" of Columbia Baptist Church. 2005 photo
