Scenic Adair County: Golden Rod, Cecil Blair Road

2005-08-15 - Columbia, KY - Photo Linda Waggener. The Kentucky State Flower, the goldenrod, a member of the aster family, Asteraceae, is prettiest in Adair County. At least this photo of the tall goldenrod (Solidago altissima) on the Cecil Blair Road, near New Concord Methodist Church, would indicate as much. Goldenrod has been Kentucky's state flower since 1926. There are some 30 species of the flower in Kentucky, but no particular species was sanctioned specifically by the state. When this photo was made, we waited for the state bird, the Cardinal, or the state butterfly, the viceroy, to drop by, but neither elected to appear.
