Adair County Magistrates working out a budget

2026-03-26 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Vicky Pike of Miss Vicky's Pampered Angus Ranch.
Redemption Road to Recovery brought media representatives to Fiscal Court Tuesday evening. Money is being made available through the Court to expand the details about the available addiction support services offered by Redemption Road, a faith-based nonprofit with both men's and women's transitional housing. The money can only be allocated on this mission, it can't be put into other funds.

Mary Bardin, community resource person, operates Redemption Road to Recovery from her office on Columbia's public square, providing services at no cost to individuals nor to the county. Patients are accepted regardless of insurance; special support for pregnant mothers and mothers with children (allowing them to keep their children during recovery). Magistrates Chris Reeder, at left, and Todd Davenport, third from left, worked out the budget details before the vote to assure fairness in distribution.

Trout Lily show continues

2026-03-25 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen.
I checked back by my favorite patch of trout lilies earlier this week to find that the cold snap had stopped the blooms entirely. But today's warm weather brought forth hundreds of the small yellow flowers.

According to virginiawildflowers.org, Erythronium americanum "plants come up, flower, and go to seed-all in about three weeks time," so it's worth taking a walk in the woods this week and next.

Travel: What happened to all the balconies?

2026-03-25 - Winchester, KY - Photo by Pen.
On a visit to slightly-Eastern Kentucky this weekend, we took Lexington Avenue toward Main Street in downtown Winchester. Friends had recommended we visit Loma's at the Opera House for lunch (an excellent recommendation, it turns out), and on the way, this scene caught my eye, in large part because of the building-width exterior balcony.

Balconies were once a common and charming use of exterior space, not just a prop for Shakespearian actors. Does anyone know why so few remain?
