Kentucky Color: Hairy Buttercup

Hairy Buttercup germinates in late fall but rarely blooms until late April and early May. It will be a foot to a foot and a half tall and covers many row crop fields as well. It is not native to North America.

Kentucky Color: Butterweed

Butterweed blooms in early to mid April and grows up to two feet tall. In spite of its weed status, the hundreds and thousands of acres of green and yellow flowers blanketing fields is a breathtaking sight after the dark and colorless drab of winter.

Black Bellied Whistling Ducks

This pair of black bellied whistling ducks was spotted on a winter trip to Florida. This breed is not frequently spotted in Kentucky, but e-birder Rickey Shive reported seeing 5 black bellied whistling ducks near Wisdom Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Metcalfe County early on Sunday morning, May 18, 2025.
