Softball field renovation at Blair Park nearing completion

2012-06-19 - Jim Blair Park, 901 Hudson Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Fence building and field grading are going on at the same time, as the regulation size softball field at Jim Blair Park nears completion. Ben Hayes, President of fence contractor Industrial, Inc., 148 Loveless Road, Russell Springs, KY. in the foreground has a crew putting the finishing touches on the fence. In the background, the tenth load of fill dirt from Burton Paving has been hauled by the Adair County Road Department to fill in a low spot on the infield which pooled water because of a poor grade. While the field is built to competition specs for softball tournaments, it will also be multi-purpose and will be used for baseball, as well. Terry Williams of the Adair County Road Department was driving the big Mack Dump truck.

Pablo's shows appreciation for Garden Club work

2012-06-19 - 104 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
It was a surprising first
, but it happened today. In their fifth year as volunteers beautifying downtown Columbia, today was the first time a local business showed appreciation for the transforming contribution the Adair County Garden Club has made. Today it happened, Antonio Aquino, far right, owner of Pablo's Mexican Grill, invited both regular maintenance crews, the Downtowners and the Trabue-House Gardeners, to lunch on the House at Pablo's Mexican Grill. Seated, from left are Lucille Lemmon, Mary Sharp, and Barbara Armitage. Standing, from left are Mary Knight, Jeanne Marshburn, and Maury Lewis.

Every Step of the Way

2012-06-19 - 201 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Barbara Armitage.
This message of love and devotion written on the Trabue House steps is all that remains of a recent wedding held in the Julia Miller Horton Memorial Rose Garden. Although it was meant for two unknown lovers the ladies of the Adair County Garden Club who maintain the gardens at the Trabue House find it comforting. Keeping the roses blooming through the blistering heat of our Kentucky summer is no easy task. Committed volunteers from the ACGC are hard at work every Tuesday morning making sure that the gardens are flourishing. If you are interested in holding your event at the Trabue House contact the Columbia Mayor's Office at 270-384-6183. -Barbara Armitage

Downtown: A changing look out a Firestone window

2012-06-19 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The deleted Firestone Building window offers a brief window to inspect the intricate masonry work of the solid brick wall in the historic building. The Red Nixon construction company is moving at a fast pace to transform the fire gutted structure into a state-of-the-art recording studio for Mr. Mike Harris and his partner, Danny Bailey. Mr. Nixon, known for great craftsmanship, is also known for getting things done. In no time - maybe not as brief a time as it took him to fire a 30 foot shot the first time he got his hands on the ball when Mr. Burr put him in the game as a substitute, that usually took just seconds - he'll have the building complete and it will be the center of pride in a revived downtown Columbia. And come to think of it - Red will have luck or the good fortune that those who prepare for it always do. He had it back then. As most recall, he almost always hit those 30 foot shots and was the hero of the game. -EW
