Scenic Adair Co., KY: A small, family sized patch of burley

2012-06-20 - Two miles east of Inroad - Photo by Ed Waggener.
There's something comforting to old time Adair Countians at the sight of a neat, small family size field of burley tobacco about like this one along Melson Ridge Road, looking west from Burchett Cemetery Road. Only ankle high now, surviving a mean drought which already has thirsty, struggling corn crops twisting, the scene brings back memories of anxious times for many a tobacco farmer in the summer when families wondered whether this year's crop, often providing most of the year's cash crop, would make it. In almost every case, by dint of loving care, nick of time showers, and a plant which comes back from the most inhospitable treatment to thrive, there would always be Christmas, store accounts would be settled, tuition could be paid, an annual mortgage obligation would be met and a note rolled over, and for some, a pint or two from the sale. Probably no worry, here, now; this crop looked quite strong, despite the withering heat, despite the long drought. -CM

Standout Garden Friend at CWC: Keitha Lee

2012-06-20 - 413 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Debbie Bradshaw.
Garden Friend at CWC: I want to send out a great big thanks to Keitha Lee, one of our summer Garden Friends who helped me spruce up the flower bed around CWC's flag pole. She worked hard adding petunias and pulling weeds not to mention doing more than her fair share of keeping the conversation going! She is greatly appreciated! -Debbie Bradshaw

2012-06-20 - Greater Gadberry, KY - Photo from the Phantom Photographer. Farm Burglar Alarm and Tick Patrol Guinea fowl serve more than one purpose on the farm. They make a lot of racket when people, animals or vehicles enter their space and they have drastically cut the tick population on our farm. We have a few keets available for sale now and we have another batch of eggs in the incubator. 270-378-6524 Charles Marshburn, GuineaMeister

Remembering a beautiful Lindsey Wilson love story

2012-06-20 - L.R. McDonald Administration Building, 210 Lindsey Wilson Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Duane Bonifer. LWC photo.
This photo of Cortez and Ruth Sewell Butler was taken three years ago by Duane Bonifer. This week, the sad news of the death of Coach Butler, at the age of 91, was a reminder of one of those timeless Lindsey Wilson love stories, about the young athlete from Tompkinsville, KY and the beautiful girl from Waterview in Cumberland County, who first met at Lindsey Wilson.
