Governor Beshear, dignitaries from Merchant Hotel balcony
2012-06-28 - 100 E. Main Street, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by Larry Smith, The Big Dawg, Campbellsville, KY. Gov. Steve Beshear, Second from left waves down to The Big Dawg from the upper floor of the Merchant Hotel across the street. From left are Campbellsville Mayor Tony Young, (Gov. Beshear), Will Patton, owner of the Merchant Hotel, and the man behind the renovation of the historic site; and Taylor County Judge Executive Eddie Rogers. The Governor was in town to deliver the big Community Development Block Grant check for $746,000, which, with other grants and loans, made the new million gallon Campbellsville Water Tank in the industrial park south of town possible. The tank will be the largest elevated storage tank in Taylor County. Governor Beshear was blown away by the beauty of Main Street, and the many renovated buildings and new structures lining the main thoroughfare - especially Mr. Patton's showplace in the making, the Merchant Hotel. - Larry Smith, The Big Dawg, 99.9 FM

Rotary Radio Auction cause so great even timid forget shyness
2012-06-28 - 314 Myrtle Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by George Kolbenschlag. Columbia Rotarians Kaye Bowman and Hunter Durham were the primary on-air personalities for much of Monday and Tuesday's Rotary Radio Auction. The auction raised over $6,500 for Adair County High School Students who will be attending Lindsey Wilson College this fall. The auction involved many caring people and was another example of the generosity of our community.

Scenic Adair Co., KY: A new garden
2012-06-28 - 300 Merchant Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Even with competition from the showy petunias, marigolds, and coxcombs, a single yellow squash plant stands out above the rest in the stone walled flower bed along the side of Haven Mission Independent Church, which is being methodically transformed by Pastor Jim Williams, his congregation, and some prominent backers who see a hidden potential in the little church. As I watch the deliberate pace of the progress at the little church, I can't help but remember one of the most beautiful stories Byron Crawford ever wrote, about the efforts of one man, Willis Pedigo, to establish a Church of Christ on North Main Street in Edmonton, KY. Mr. Pedigo was so humble he would only let the famed columnist write the story without his name. He was referred to as "the man." Fortunately, Pastor Williams is not so shy, and enjoys the increasing attention to the little church on Merchant Street, which grew out of a tiny Production Credit Association office once there. The flowers are one more attraction riveting its image into memories and sights of Downtown Columbia. -EW

Scenic Adair Co., KY: First Church of the Nazarene
2012-06-28 - 1200 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. It happened so quickly it may have escaped notice: The Steeple at the Columbia First Church of the Nazarene was removed, renovated, and replaced this past week by Campbellsville Industries, the steeple people. The steeple is one of Columbia's most familiar landmarks, whether those who have the image inbedded in their subconscious know the name of the church or not. On the Louie B. Nunn Parkway and for the tens of thousands who visit the Lindsey Wilson Sports Park it stands out on a very pleasing prominence. This view is a bit retro, an homage to the years the steeple tilted backward. It no longer does, but the angle - up close and personal - may make it seem to do so. As incredibly attractive as the church campus is from a distance, it's even more pleasing on the grounds - a park like setting with spectacular vistas, reassuring lights in the distance, and small, seldom noticed details like the grand Twin Oak picnic area. On Wednesday evening, prayer meeting night, friendly gatherings awaiting the start of services seemed especially appreciative of the blessings of a cooling evening, enjoying the gentle breezes which always cool the tops of hills in Adair County. -EW.
