Epicurean Kentuckian: Red Beans and Rice

2012-07-16 - An EK kitchen - Photo by Pen.
Red beans and rice. A simple, fast one-dish meal starts with a bed of medium grain white rice and a sparing measure of red beans , joined with sauteed diced and raw diced Vidalia onion, halved cherry tomatoes, with a tiny bit of cilantro; it's delicated seasoned to taste. A dedicated rice cooker comes in handy for this dish; red beans from a can save time and summer time energy costs. Best of all - it's a peasant dish fit for a Vanderbilt.

Mary's House raises funds with fair parking

2012-07-16 - Photo by Fran Neat. Kyle Cundiff, a member of the Mary's House Committee, held a sign urging fairgoers to use the Joe Pyles Brick Yard parking lot at the corner of Fairground and Wain Streets. The use of the lot was a big boost to the goal of raising $40,000 by August 1, 2012, to build a home for the McGuffin family. Over $650 was raised with this single project, with over $250 coming in from the huge crowd at the Saturday, July 14, 2012 finale. At the end of that day, we had a total received of $10,221.00 cash in hand. Still a long way of our goal, but we have faith that we're going to make it. (But, over the weekend, we don't have any new receipts to report just yet, so give one of our members a call. - Fran Neat Clicking ReadMore accesses earlier story with list of all contact's for Mary's House.

Scenic Cumberland Co., KY: The Alpine Motel neon sign

2012-07-16 - 700 Hill Street, Burkesville, KY - Photo by Larry Smith, The Big Dawg, Campbellsville, KY. Bringing back memories of yesteryear - This sign is a treasured memory for travelers from all over, for sure those of us who still love to find classic neon signs, intact, which the owners have wisely left in place. It's at the entrance to an accommodations complex with one of the most breathtaking views in America - of the county seat of Cumberland County, Burkesville (Kentucky's Best Kept Secret), the Cumberland River Valley, Kentucky 90 East, and the mansions on the hill across the Cumberland River. Burkesville itself can be photographed - now by appointment or by registered guests only - with details of North and South Main Street and Upper River Road and Hill Street, with detail which rivals satellite pictures. A slight misnomer, at least a huge understatement, is the name of "Hill Street," which might more accurately be called "Vertical Climb Street." Its twists and curves keep drivers on alert! CM, Photo by Larry Smith, The Big Dawg, 99.9 FM radio, Campbellsville, KY, and The WAVE, 92.7 FM Columbia/Russell Springs, KY, and admittedly enthralled captive of all things Cumberland County, KY. If you go The sign and Cumberland County and The Rest of the World will be closer together after today, Monday, July 16, 2012, as Clicking on Readmore shows.
