Meet & Greet: Enthusiasm building for 2012 school year

2012-07-27 - 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Happy with ACES Principal at ACES, Sandy Wilson shared a moment to talk about the coming school year - which starts August 8, 2012 - at Adair County Elementary School with Superintendent Alan W. Reed at yesterday's "Meet & Greet," at the school's central office. Among the things they talked about was how well the school's acronym works. "When the school was named," she said, "I don't think anybody gave the initials any thought. But 'ACES' almost immediately became the name - and we all love it!"

The Putt-Putt Miniature Golf Course at the Circle R Restaurant in Columbia, KY, is an evening favorite for the Grevans - Graham and Evan. It's also their favorite course - they check them all out around Louisville and Shelbyville. It's a favorite of their parents and grandparents, too. The prices are about half that of the Louisville area miniature golf courses.

Remember?: Lakeland Apparel ca early 1980s

2012-07-27 - 1380 Burkesville Road, Columbia, KY - Photo from the collection of Ralph Roy Waggener.
It was a time of boundless optimism
when the huge building for Lakeland Apparel was under construction in the early 1980s. Above, center, is James Brock, the president, and at right, partner Gaylon Yarberry and at left, Mike Ellis. Brock was Adair County Judge Executive at the time. Yarberry was the powerful, charismatic Adair County Republican Party Chairman. The plant thrived for a time, with employment reaching as many as 200. After Lakeland Apparel, the building housed Oshkosh No. 2 plant in Columbia, and later was sold to Ben Arnold to become the international headquarters of Image Analysis, the firm occupying the building today. Judge Brock now resides in the Nashville area. The Chairman now operates the popular Huddle House 24 hour restaurant in Campbellsville after retiring from his last position in education as Principal of Taylor County High School.

Epicurean Kentuckian: Triple Threat Irish Cupcakes

2012-07-26 - Flatwoods, KY - Photo by Pen. These chocolate cupcakes pack layered flavors because they're made with Guinness Stout, Jamison's, and Bailey's, and include a chocolate ganache filling. There were only a half-dozen left at lunchtime from Baker's Desserts--part of Flatwoods Diner--but they did have a delicious cheesecake as backup.

2012-07-26 - First & Farmers National Bank, 224 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
The timing couldn't have been better: Braxton Smith, a big fan of the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders holds an envelope labelled Kids Need Kicks delivered by Lindsey Wilson Football Coach Chris Oliver, representing a big contribution to the shoes for kids program, founded by Cricket McCloud, center Braxton's grandmother, and his mother, Mindy Smith, right. Kids Need Kicks provides new shoes for the start of school for kids whose parents or guardians, for whatever reason, are unable to buy them in time for school. The program, through careful shopping, can buy good, high quality shoes for $30 a pair. A $10 donation can provide 10 pairs of new socks.
