Old Poster: Gordon W. Clarke for County Judge
2012-08-02 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo From CJE Office. Charles Grimsley passed this old poster on to Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton. It's from an election 63 years ago, so a few of Adair County's voters likely don't remember Mr. Clarke. He was an erudite man - maybe a little ahead of his time - and he did have a wonderful wife and popular children. He lost the Republican primary that year, but ran again in the fall as an Independent. You could do that back then. Maybe the poster had the "Republican" printed taped over and that has since fallen off. They lived on Greensburg Street, across from the Robert and Mikki Flowers/old Montgomery Place. Maybe readers will remember more and more about the elections of 1948. -EW

Market off Main, Fridays in Campbellsville, KY
2012-08-02 - Court Street, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by Innocent Bystander. Market off Main Campbellsville's answer to the Hay Market in Louisville, KY, and the Pavilion in Lebanon - is making summer time lively each Friday, 10am-6pmET/9am-5pmCT, almost rivalling the huge numbers on Main Street now that Cruising on Main is back, tolerated by a hospitable new police chief. Above, left photo, Jennifer Schuhman allowed a man holding a jar of honey to get his picture taken with her. Right The market itself. By the way, there is now a micropolitan challenge: Micropolitan center, Somerset has as many as 3,000 cruisers on Fridays and Saturdays. Micropolitan center Campbellsville, an even more advanced community, is out to exceed that record, according to the man holding the jar of honey, who says farm products from other counties, including Green, Marion and even Adair County, is offered at The Market off Main. There's even live music, he said. "And the set-up space is Free," he added. -CM

Larry Smith: Show Calendar from Franklin Theater
2012-08-01 - N. Main Street, Greensburg, KY - Photo from collection of Larry Smith. Larry Smith sent this theater calendar for the Franklin, Greensburg, KY, for December 1952. It's in almost perfect condition, though it's almost 62 years old. Smith is at radio station WHVE, the WAVE FM 92.7, this morning, and will be at The Big Dawg, 99.9 FM in Campbellsville, KY, this afternoon. "Movies and movie theaters have played a big part in my life he says," telling of one of his earliest jobs at the Summersville Skyline Drive-in theater, where, for a time, he was projectionist, a coveted job for an ambitious Green County farm boy. It was his springboard into Show Biz.
